The L64781 reports the uncorrected BER of the incoming signal via two 8-bit 
ports, one has the lower 8 bits of a 16-bit value, the other has the upper 8 
bits. The code was reading the lower port twice.

I doubt that the BER is used anywhere within driver or user-mode software.
