Does it say anathing about 3.88?
I use xawtv 3.88 withtout any problem every day ;-)

Have you created the devices (or are you using devfs) also?

Are you using DVB Head or dvb-kernel? Which version, on which kernel?
With dvb-kernel, you should delete videodev which come from the kernel
(I had forgotten this and it caused me lots of troubles).
