[linux-dvb] Broken DVB card?

[ N.B. I sent similar message to vdr-list a couple of days ago. As the
problem is probably (?) hw-based, I thought of this as a more
appropriate list to post to and hence the list change. ]

I've been having trouble with my VDR system. Right now I am suspecting
my Hauppauge DVB-C full-featured card as the culprit.

The main problem is that the whole system often hangs while (re)loading
the DVB driver modules. That is why I don't use the runvdr-script
anymore.

When I run 'make reload' the hang happens after the following lines:
---clip---
insmod input; \
insmod evdev; \
insmod dvb-ttpci.o;
Using /lib/modules/2.4.25/kernel/drivers/input/input.o
Using /lib/modules/2.4.25/kernel/drivers/input/evdev.o
---clip---

Then the computer hangs completely, only a hard reset helps after
that. Often driver loading succeeds after the boot, though not always.

Another issue is that occasionally VDR seems to be unable to tune to
channels, showing only black screen with no sound. Reloading the modules
helps---if it doesn't hang the computer, that is. I don't know whether
this is a known bug or not. Whatever the cause, this is the reason I
have to reload the drivers every now and then.

The computer has a AMD K6-2 450 MHz processor and a TT budget DVB-C in
addition to the FF card. However, these symptoms were there also before
I bought the budget card. I use linux-dvb.2003-11-08 drivers and VDR
1.2.6.

My question is that is this surely a hardware fault or can something
still be done with this problem? Right now I have a fan blowing straight
at the FF card so the heat should not be an issue. However, the fan has
not always been there. In general, how much should one worry about heat?
Do these cards need separate active cooling although they don't come
with any fans?

Any pointers would be much appreciated.
