Did you check the other paramters, too? AFAIK wrong settings for the bandwidth  
cannot be corrected automaticaly.

I don't know what's going on. If I read the CHIP_ID-register before the 
status-register, all works well:

0x7F: 13
0x00: 00
0x7F: 13
0x00: 01
0x7F: 13
0x00: 3B
0x7F: 13
0x00: FB
