I don't know about vlc support. Mplayer needed fixes: in an upper
layer the header extension for 4:2:2 was rejected, IIRC, so the stream
wasn't passed on to the codecs. That was in main/libmpdemux/mpeg_hdr.c.
You also had to add a line in a config file before compiling mplayer:
in main/etc/codecs.conf.

There was a thread about this here about two months ago.
