I really can't see why VDR would suddenly start to delete recordings
without any need to do so.

Are you running a "plain vanilla" VDR, or have you applied any patches?
I would especially check if any of these patches has changed something
in the 'recordings.c' file, around the area of RemoveDeletedRecordings(),
AssertFreeDiskSpace(), cRecordings::Load() or the FINDCMD macro.
