I have Linux on a small PowerPC module running which boots within a few
seconds. The kernel is in flash memory and everything else is NFS. After
the boot runs a webserver. Instead of using init it just starts a
standalone shell which starts the necessary daemons in background.

Such a standalone system would have a build-in disk anyway. IMHO, such a
system will not boot much faster from CF as from normal ide if nothing
is changed in the boot process. CF flash is *slower* than current ide
disks.
