[vdr] Re: Two VDR, any experiences

Hi,

I have a simular configuration with two maschines, and so I am also
interested in any ideas to solve this...

I was thinking of some scripts that syncs the two timer.conf files
automatically, but my time and script-knowledge is limited in the moment. A
simple copy of the file will not work, because AFAIK vdr reads the
timer.conf only at startup.

So one solution would be to parse the timers.conf file of the two VDRs, try
to sync the contents together and distribute the result via svdrp.

For me the main lack of the missing remote for the cellar is to do instant
recording. I have to walk to my homeoffice to start this. (switch on my
monitor, etc...). All other programming I use to do with the TvTv-Website in
my office, so the sync-rules may be simple in my case.

I think to patch the Living-Room-VDR that it will not record at all is only
a simple change (please correct me if I am wrong)

@Klaus: Would it be a very complicate thing to define a command (via svdrp)
that re-reads a changed timers.conf file without stop/start of vdr? Or is it
allready possible and I missed something?

Nice week to all

jm

Subject: [vdr] Two VDR, any experiences

Hi,

because my vdr box isn't really quiet yet, I'm wondering, whether the
following scheme would work out of the box:

One vdr with several DVB-cards placed in the cellar, where it may cry
loudly
Another vdr with one DVB-card and DVD-drive in the livingroom.
All programming is done on the vdr in the livingroom
/video etc is in both cases on the vdr in the cellar
/etc/vdr of the cellar vdr will be used for both

I think, the only problem would be, to hinder the system in the
livingroom, to try to begin recording. But I'm not sure about the
communication between the several instances of vdr. Is this done via the
file or are there other methods used. I didn't investigate the source up
to now.

Of course the ideal solution would be, to have another vdr anywhere I
want to watch tv and connect them, to behave as one big vdr with several
output devices. Just dreaming.

Martin
