Wow, interesting.

Well I've come up with another idea for why that image was there. The
stations do not really send up the signal themselves, insteadt they send
them terrestrically (small ones only) or over satellite (big ones) to
the uplink stations where they get packaged (and often digiticed) and
then sent up. If those links fail, a few stations might have such a poor
quality the technicans switch to a test.

I do have an old recording on VCR which showed one of the really wiered
link falures. It was made after the official programme. So it starts
with the end of programme, then noise, for a long time, then, suddenly a
weak image, full of FM noise (fishes), after a minute or so that
disappears into noise. This recording is from the 70s.
