strange, i also have a Pioneer DVD-106S and i have never used any tool on it. 
The noise is far from annoying. Sure, it is not silent, but even with volume 
set to less that normal levels, its undetectable.
I have the impression (judging by noise), that for dvd playback the drive 
starts with full speed and settles down to something slower after a few 
seconds.
