The disc can contain programs. (as in instructions for a computer, not
just media content).  The player runs this program.  Some of those
instructions will fetch and compare regions etc.
  Something like:
    if (region!=2) GOTO still frame complaining of pirates

This is different to the original method of region coding which was
implemented by the drives (and the disks).
