[vdr] Hello

Hello all ..
 
I'm new to the list :D .  I found out about vdr stuff not too long ago.
And am quiet interested in starting a "little" project, but I have a few
questions :D
 
Recently, I just bought a house.  And, being the geek that I am have to
have new toys to play with.  The other day, I finally got off my lazy
butt and re-hooked up my satellite dish (Dish 500).  Currently, with the
system, I have the dishplay(piece of junk) that allows maybe up to 4or 5
hrs of recording time.
 
Anyways, to make a long story short.  I want to build a vdr system.  I
have an extra machine I just built (it's a 900mhz, probably overkill,
but I have other plans for it as well ;D).   Couple of questions I have
tho.
 
First of all, I live in the United States.  From what little research I
have done, and from what I can translate throught Babelfish (I don't
know german, sorry =( ).  It seems that the DVB-s cards are only
available in Europe?   If that's the case, if I order one, will it work
on an American system?
 
I guess that's really it.  Bottom line is.  I live in America, is what
I'm trying todo possible or am I just up the creek =D
 
Thanks for your time..if the project is do-able, I'll be sure to keep
track if you guys are interested.  My main goal is a VDR and MP3 player
for now.   I have lots of other cosmetic things I'd like to play around
with also ;D
