I compiled vdr-1.0.4 on a RedHat 8.0 which uses GCC 3.2 . I don't remember 
that I patched the source in any way to get it compiling.
Maybe that RedHat patched GCC to be a bit more relaxed but AFAIK it's only a 
very recent version which is more likely to be even more strict.
