I don't think that that would change anything.
It may help to make sure it buffers just a "little" more.
Try removing the comments around the code marked

   //XXX+ Maybe we need this to avoid...

in transfer.c. For a quick test you could also start Transfer Mode and then
press "Pause" to stop replaying for a moment. Then press "Pause" again to
continue. Do the distortions still happen then?
