[vdr] Program Information for a VDR

I have just started looking into a VDR for home.  I live in Australia.
If you do not have cable TV has anyone had any luck in using a digital
TV set top box to get Program information into the VDR?  I am still
pretty new to this so I may have missed something, any assistance would
be appreciated.
