cheaply - well. At least Matrix Orbital does have a German distributor but
these devices aren't exactly cheap.

LCDproc comes with a mapping file which is used to map character codes to
internal characters. You need to set your definitions before compile (at
least with lcdproc-0.4.4).

Maybe it's just me but I haven't seen anything like that in 0.4.4. I
haven't touched 0.5 yet, though. This question is better asked on the
lcdproc mailing list.
