I'm unable to reproduce this.

With gzip compressing a search about "24" takes five seconds with a lot 
of results. Without gzip compressing this search takes about 30 
seconds. All this with an 128k connection.

Please create an strace log with:

strace -f -F -s 1000 -o vdradmind.strace ./vdradmind.pl -nf

and send me the result.
