[vdr] EPIA-M, linux, and MPEG2 decoder

I wonder if anyone can summarise the state of play with getting the EPIA-M mainboard MPEG2 decoder working through linux. Things appear to be changing fairly quickly in this area and I not sure I understand the state of play.
In short:
- Is the MPEG2 decoder supported under linux
- How is that done? I am right in thinking it is only achieved through XFree86 and a VIA binary kernel module??
This link here gives some posts on various reverse engineering activities, but I'm still not sure of the state of play
