Looks like something with the palette. I guess there is another color used for 
transparent or background if the scaled picture doesn't fit the window 
completely. I have some ongoing changes in that area anyways...

BTW the location you mentioned, what do you mean exactly? Where the conversion 
is done? Where the depth is set? I could imaging XINE could also display the 
original truecolor image instead of the 8-bit dithered version (well to 
achieve that, VDR's palette handling would have to be changed)
