Many benefits:

a) hw acceleration (skaling, bit blitting...), hw layers, hw alphatransparency (of course only if hw is capable and supported by DirectFB)

b) drawing routines for very easy implementation of alpha transparent OSD 

c) more or less transparent API, which means that if gfx hw is not supported, 
DFB will work on plain fb. 

d) DirectFB was exactly developed for such an application
