No, nothing so well-informed as that, I'm afraid! :-) I just noticed
from discussions such as
http://www.digitv-forum.co.uk/viewtopic.php?t=350
that people were speaking about Zarlink/NXT6000 versions of the USB
model just as (I believe) there are Zarlink/NXT6000 versions of the PCI
version. So, not knowing much about it, I assumed the PCI and USB
devices were largely the same right through. Obviously if the BT8xx is a
PCI-only thing, that assumption must be wrong. :-)

I was pretty sure that was what was happening - thanks! I've attached
the output of lsusb -v to this email. The DigiTV is connected to a
powered hub plugged into a USB 2.0 PCMCIA card if that helps pinpoint
which bits are helpful - I think the DigiTV is the thing with vendor
"Anchor Chips, Inc." and lots of "Vendor Specific" fields.

Sure, I'll have a go with a Windows machine when I can.
As far as documentation for the USB command protocol goes: on their
website, they do offer a "Windows SDK", which seems to be C++ source for
the Windows drivers (to my inexperienced-in-Windows eyes.) The licence
prohibits commercial use without written consent from Nebula, so as it
stands it's not compatible with the GPL. But given Nebula's seemingly
helpful attitude, they might give permission to use it as a reference
with which to develop a Linux driver in C. I assume compilable, usable
source code is vastly superior to incomplete and complex protocol
docs! :-) I'd be happy to write to them to ask for their thoughts on
doing that if you'd like.
