I don't think that we have reached a full decision on this stuff yet, 
although now I see it as a moot point, given that Andrew De Quincy's 
proposal is totally awesome, IMHO.

I am the initial person to comment on Perceval's patch, and had I not 
said anything, it would have been applied by now.  This patch improves 
things, and doesnt make matters any worse than before.  This is a step 
forward, and I agree that the patch should be accepted and committed to 
the repo asap.

We may continue this debate if anybody is still interested in discussing 
things further.  This patch is safe to apply right now, and anything 
that we would like to change about it can still be done after the fact.
