I have been asked by colleagues many times why anyone would want to do
such work for no pay. In addition to SuSE which I bought on CD/DVD, I
run gentoo and much the same apps at a cost of zero DM/£/$. The reasons
are legendary and not in the least astonishing - there are many articles
on the why, published all over the internet.

"SUPPORTED" means it works, not staffed by helpdesks. "MAINTAINED" means
it's actively being maintained and developed. Nowhere is the word salary
or pay mentioned, though developers are sometimes funded for their work
or their employers pay them to do it.
You are not alone, many people don't understand OpenSource, that
includes significant sections of the software industry, the few, like
IBM caught the clue-train early and got on board, while Sun keeps
blowing hot and cold, whereas Microsoft is clued-in, but just throws
rocks and insults.

Sid.
