Am I correct in assuming that the results above were produced after
applying my test patch, unmodified? ...or did you have to uncomment /
comment the dvb_pll_attach() line?

Hmmm... So it has nothing to do with the v4l-dvb tree? Try unplugging
the usb part, and plug it back into a different usb port.
