I've also had recent problems with grab image creation. I didn't really
have time to debug the source of the problem (updates of vdr,
ImageMagick, kernel...).
I choose a "brute force" work-around using TVTIME (distributed with
Fedora Core):
# run tvtime-command to create a png image
tvtime-command SCREENSHOT "bg.png"
sleep 1
# use ImageMagick to covert image to jpeg
convert ~/bg.png ~/bg.jpeg
# move bg.jpeg from home directory to directly specified on command
line, i.e. .
mv ~/bg.jpeg "$@"
# call image viewer, such as EyeOfGnome, to verify image is ok.
eog "$@"/bg.jpeg
