[linux-dvb] Re: low-cost dvb-card and 166 MHz cpu-rate

Once upon a time Martin Bitz shaped the electrons to say...

>Hello everybody.

>I have a 166 Mhz VDR-box with a siemens DVB-S card and a single-LNB.

AFAIK is the "More CPU power" only required by the Windows srap:
They use the CPU instead of a hardware MPEG2 *de*coder.
The VDR does the "decode" using the MPEG2-hardware on the
full feature card. "Recording" is "just" copying 500KB/s on the
disk.

Why not both?

Why do you want to do this and do not feed all cards from
the dish using a "multi" switch or simple T-Tap (Sat-"Verteiler"
costs approx 10DM. And you can record 2 channels simulation,
as long as the transponders are on the same polarization and "Band"
which is a not totally unlikely condition. (At least as
those channels i want to record simultanious are on the same
polarization..))

But anyway:
It would be nice to watch the recording scannels on an easy(!)
way to see if the recording is OK or if the programs were not
shifted to an other time...
To find the running recordings is much too complicate
Menu,
cursor down to "timers"
scroll and manually search the runninmg timers
back
scroll to "recordings"
find the runnig recordings in a long list.
move to the end (how??)
watch the running record
Menu, scroll "stop replay"
or find next running recording see above.

No, you do need only 1 "fullfeature" card: The one to look with ;-)
The difference between "lowcost" and "full featuer are:

Full feature has

 Hardware MPEG2 decoder
 Video out
 audio out
 RC in
 cam/CI plug

more than a "lowcost"

If you don't need 2 CI i see no technical reason why one
should buy more thatn one full feature, except to give back
to siemens their kindness to give the documentation of the card.
