Maybe a overkill, but try this:
 Use a lirc-sender and if you press the MUTE button on your VDR-control your
machine is sending out the MUTE command of your TV-control and your TV
mutes. Should be possible by using irexec and rc, but i guess there will be
some problems with the 2 remotes sending at the same time will disturb each
other (maybe a small delay and opposite orientation of the LED's can help).
I will try it (I too want to get rid of the many RC's here), as fast as I
got a IR-Led.
