Are you sure that vdr hangs? What makes you believe this?
Have you gone through the key learning stuff that VDR does on the first
start (and all subsequent starts untill you successfully tought it the
remote control keys)?

How are going to view the TV picture? Via a DXR3 or via xawtv?
