A couple.. It's way better than some of the alternatives however.

Pipe the resulting PS to mplayer and watch the timestamps as they roll past.

I get that for about 15 seconds then mplayer ties itself in a knot and 
crashes. Have a close look at the A/V timestamps and also the A-V 
difference. On most ts's here I see the audio racking up normally and 
the video keeps looping the timestamp around a 5 second period until it 
all goes down in flames.

Probably behind. There are some odd ts's coming from some of the sat 
channels.
