Would that mod allow me to try HDTV with my Hauppauge DVB-s rev 1.3?

Why not? :-). The "budget patch" allow to get to the whole TS of a transponder on a FF card, exactly as happen on a budget card. So, the rest of the process will be the same for FF_patched or budget.

Any HTDV service (Video + Audio + ...) will be only a part of the services in the transponder. The packet demultiplexer, on the DVB drivers, also don't should have problems with it.

About the decoding of the "extended" MPEG2 and its rendering on the "output
device", which of course can NOT be done on the FF card, I don't have idea;
You can use any software decoder of your choice. On a 2GHz Celeron it loads the CPU about 30% to decode HDTV streams when using a recent OpenGL card as output device. Use a high-resolution display if possible, the downscaling algorithms of most implementations have been buggy when I tried the last time, scale factors below 0.5 caused artifacts. Full-screen renderings look just fine.
