It's definitely the old Nova-T. Lspci says:

02:0b.0 Multimedia controller: Philips Semiconductors SAA7146 (rev 01)

Was hoping to get it working without doing anything as drastic (for me the begineer!) as recompiling the kernel. Assumed that because it's a common/old card it might be supported out of the box.
