What does dmesg say around that time?

Oh - there seem to be some problems with the /dev/dvb directory:

*) devfs creates it OK
*) udev doesn't quite work (look back in the mailing list archives on 
linuxtv.org)
*) Otherwise you'll have to create it yourself with MAKEDEV-DVB.sh
