Do you mean 2.6.10? If so, make sure that the kernel is compiled with
hotplug support (CONFIG_HOTPLUG=y) and that hotplug is installed. That's
about the extent of it.

I don't think 2.6.9 used request_firmware(), but read the file off the
filesystem itself. (And then the file was called sc_main.mc instead.)
