IMHO a full DVB-S card is a valuable and expensive resource,
so the assumption that by default it cannot receive anything
sounds to me like piling a second mistake upon the initial one.
The initial mistake being that less than 50% of the expensive 
card is put into productive use.

Quad LNBs cost much less than half a DVB-S card...

Having said that, of course it would still be nice if VDR
would be a bit more modular and could use other output
devices such as TV-out or a cheap MPEG decoder card, etc.
rather than requiring an expensive DVB-S card for replay.
