Why don't you use the runvdr script ? It works like a charm and if killall 
is missing just install it:

http://freshmeat.net/projects/psmisc/

Then install a command:
2 Restart vdr       : echo "restarting vdr ..."; sleep 2; killall -9 vdr

and you're done.
