It depends on the configuration. The loopback interface (called "lo" in
Linux) is setup at boot-time with ifconfig, and is usually assigned
127.0.0.1 as IP address. Then in /etc/hosts you usually have a line
associating IP (127.0.0.1) to machine name (localhost) and one or more
aliases to the machine name (toto, foobar, whatevernameyouwant).

The "lo" interface and "127.0.0.1" address are usually almost synonyms,
except that you seldom use a network interface (which is datalink layer)
in configuration files, and rather IP address (which is network layer
and independent from the underlying hardware).

What about a GPRS interface ? :) A colleague of mine told me about a
friend of his working for Nokia who did such a vdr he can program from
his mobile phone. But a modem accepting incoming connections would do
the trick too, I suppose.
