Well, this is possible. Connect on port 2001 and type:

grab help

You will get a text how to use this function:

HELP GRAB
214-GRAB <filename> [ jpeg | pnm [ <quality> [ <sizex> <sizey> ] ] ]
214-    Grab the current frame and save it to the given file. Images can
214-    be stored as JPEG (default) or PNM, at the given quality (default
214-    is 'maximum', only applies to JPEG) and size (default is full
screen).
