Maybe i'am wrong, but my xawtv switches in xv to the same modeline as in 
overlay mode (Key F), would find it more convenient to simply make it use the 
screen resolution and do anything else similar.
That with the black borders can not be avoided if you watch 16:9 material on 
4:3 monitors ;-)
