I didn't even think of that possibility, thanks. I'll check if
the modules are being (un)loaded while VDR is running and if that
is the case I'll just try to compile them right into the kernel.

My VDR is RedHat 7.2-based, running kernel 2.4.7-10 recompiled
from the redhat kernel-source-rpm.

Trying a different kernel is one of the next things I'm going to
try, anyways, although with the limited field of operation the
VDR machine is seeing I was hoping to just leave the distribution
kernel and not worry about it :-/

Still, first I'm gonna try hooking up the DVD to the VIA-based
regular IDE, it's not like I'm going to see any performance loss
from not using the on-board promise controller for that kind of
equipment.
