You can solve the Problem by using a special scheduling method for VDR.
The nessesary Kernel-Patch and tool are available at:

I use it on a 133MHz Computer with 2 DVB-s cards. I have multiple servers and 
serveral other programms running simultaneously, and the recation-time of VDR 
is always fast. The swap-partition is turned on and in use.

If there is demand for it I can publish a patch for VDR that does not need 
vdrrun.c and makes it possible to use VDR on even slower machines than mine 
without problems and fast reaction (kernel-patch required).
