You should have a look at http://avifile.sourceforge.net , it is a library and 
player to play AVI files using the original Windows codecs (which you have to 
copy yourself, but they are freely available on the net). The problem you 
face is AFAIK that such informations like frames/s may be codec-dependent... 
anyhow, AVIFile is the best AVI source for Linux, and those people can surely 
help you.
