i had similar problems befor i renamed /bin/ash to /bin/sh.

you may also get away with creating a link "/bin/sh" to whatever your
shell is called. maybe you can find something useful at:

http://thf.ath.cx/public/VdrNfsroot-HOWTO-1.4.txt
