Well what I do is to recode VDR's recordings with mencoder (comes with
mplayer). ffmpeg didn't really work reliably for on the fly recording
for me. (last time I've tried)

Sure, ffmpeg can of course solve some of my problems. I have tried the
streaming, and I have to say, if it works, it really is impressive. It
can recode the video to lots of different formats, including pushed JPEG
animations.

This should already work, at least last time I've tried.
