Okay, now I did this. Playing around, I figured out that grep somehow 
"misbehaves" when being called from vdr (which in turn is started at boot 
time).

obviously  cat /proc/mounts | grep -q "$path" doesn't work  (path = /mnt/cdrom)

after I used grep -q cdrom it now works. Not elegant, but hey!  :-)
