[vdr] Re: OT: case (was: RE: temp of card)

.. looks like a 20 lines by 4 rows LCD, can't tell the make model, but it looks
like it is controlled through one of the serial ports .
VDR (with the appropriate LCD patch, included in AIO) supports whatever display
is supported by the lcdproc package (http://lcdproc.omnipotent.net , currently
offline) .
The cost ... it depends on how much soldering you want to do.
Matrix orbital sells 40x4 backlit displays compatible with lcdproc, with a
serial interface, for around 60US$, some models also support input buttons
(the
20x4 with input capability runs for around 75US$). These LCDs are plug and play
solutions .. buy the lcd, connect to the serial cable, compile lcdproc and you
are up and running.
If you don't mind soldering and if you know a little bit of electronics you can
buy a standard lcd based on the hitachi hd44780 microcontroller (they come in
various sizes, 16x2, 20x2, 40x2, 20x4) and then build a parallel interface (
http://home.iae.nl/users/pouweha/lcd/lcd.shtml for a general explanation and
http://markh.de/hardware.html for pdf schematics of the various possible
interfaces).
I bought two 40x2 non backlit LCDs for 5 euro in a electronic fair and, since I
can't solder (really, I tried, but I keep burning either the components or my
fingers) I had to borrow a friend in order to build the small circuit needed
(two variable resistors, two 7805, one db25 connector, lots of wiring). Total
cost of the components .. around 15 euro, not counting the two pizzas for the
guy that did the soldering ;-)
Is it working ? Yes, but I am currently having problems with one of the two LDCs
wanting more than the 5v power required in theory.

Ciao

Mattia
