I wonder if it would be possible to use DirectFB library
(www.directfb.org) to draw the OSD graphics on the framebuffer device?
Although DirectFB supports translucent windows, I'm not sure if it's
possible to superimpose the OSD on top of the TV-program using
the DirectFB.

So how about using the Mplayer for the software MPEG-decoding and the
DirectFB for the OSD drawing/superimposing? Show everything on a graphics
card (or on the TV-out of a graphics card) using framebuffer. Then we
could get the full functionality of the VDR using budget DVB-cards only,
right? Would it be possible?

If not, at least Mplayer should work for SW-decoding:

For those who have missed it, there already exists an interesting project
by Mike Pieper mixing the VDR and the directFB:

Best regards,
