Values not given in channels.conf will be set to defaults, which are
listed in channels.c (see cChannel::cChannel()). In order to be able
to support the "old" driver, these are not all "auto" since the "old"
driver doesn't have "auto" values for all these parameters. This will
change once I drop support for the "old" driver and switch completely
to the new HEAD version.

However, I can't guarantee that even "auto" values will work in your
particular setup, so I guess what Gavin suggested is the best solution:
always enter _all_ parameters.
