Yes, on my system the epg-scan seems to be the cause of these problems  (try 
to deactivate it by setting the scan timeout to 0h).
A bit more information about your system (CPU, memory, vdr and dxr3 version
etc.) would be useful.
Btw: normally this is no buffer size problem but a bit error problem or a
a/v sync problem (for the future a less sensitive algorithm is planned).
Try also the patch from Sascha Volkenandt (see [vdr] Re: [PATCH] Reduce CPU 
usage during playback). This patch has reduced the cpu usage during 
playback of about 40% !!! on my system (AMD K6-350)).
