[vdr] slightly OT: how to set system time when not running VDR as root

I am sorry if this is RTFM.
I tried to search for all the keywords I could imagine and did not find a
solution.
When running VDR as a dedicated user (as described by Hubertus Sandmann) VDR
cannot update the system clock.
Do I have to run VDR as root to enjoy this feature or is there another
solution?
