Just for the archive: your hint above point me in the right
direction. Starting with runvdr did not work. Starting directly
in the shell did work. The reason was quite simple: some dark
hour I added the line
  DVDCSS_METHOD=KEY
in the runvdr script. With this setting mplayer gives me the
error message "libdvdread: Can't open /dev/dvd for reading".

After removing this line anything works as expected :-)
